In ONCA Sanctuary, Cefira, a young and spirited Margay, is steadily preparing for life in the wild. Rescued in 2021 as a vulnerable newborn, she has shown a natural aptitude for hunting, often actively engaging in the act even when accompanied by her caretakers.Cefira, whose name signifies ‘a high wind or breeze’, mirrors her species innate agility and prowess. Margays, scientifically known as Leopardus wiedii, are renowned for their exceptional tree-climbing skills and nocturnal hunting abilities, playing a crucial role in ecological balance.
As we gear up for Cefira’s reintroduction to her natural habitat, our primary concern is facilitating her dehumanization, encouraging her natural instincts and independence. This involves a comprehensive program designed to minimize her reliance on human interaction, while enhancing her survival stkills. Alongside this, our team is conducting meticulous habitat assessments to identify the ideal release site. These evaluations consider factors such as prey availability, environmental safety, and potential territorial conflicts, ensuring Cefira’s seamless transition into a life where she can thrive autonomously in the wild.
Cefira’s journey from rescue to potential release embodies our conservation efforts. At this young stage, her development is a beacon of hope for Margay conservation and a testament to our commitment to these unique species.
