Our Spider Monkeys

Amidst the vibrant ecosystem of the Bolivian Amazon, ONCA provides a safe haven for over 20 individual Black-faced Spider Monkeys, known scientifically as Ateles chamek. These agile and intelligent primates, with their long limbs and prehensile tails, navigate the treetops with remarkable grace and agility.
Our sanctuary is not just a refuge; it’s a place of natural continuity, where some of these spider monkeys were born free, thriving within the center’s protected environment.

Their dark, expressive faces and sociable nature are a constant source of fascination and joy for our team. These monkeys form intricate social bonds and communicate through a complex array of sounds and gestures, showcasing the depth of their social intelligence.
The Ateles chamek plays a pivotal role in the rainforest’s health as adept seed dispersers. Their well-being is crucial for the maintenance of this biodiverse habitat, yet they face threats from habitat loss and hunting.
